Mixed Tape #3 Harry Manx

Harry Manx Mixed Tape

“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. Harry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument.

I’ve crossed paths with Harry a few times over the years at music festivals. I’ve always enjoyed his intoxicating groove. One thing I’ve always admired about his playing is how amazing he is at playing lap style slide and singing at the same time! He’s got great tone and phrasing, tasty licks and a unique sound blending eastern and western influences. If you aren’t familiar with Harry’s music, check out his latest record Om Suite Ohm. Harry just wrapped up a European tour and is heading to BC Canada for a string of shows in Early April 2014. Check out his tour schedule to find out when he’s coming to your town. When I first thought of putting this series together, Harry was at the top of my list. I knew he would come up with an interesting mix of material. He certainly fallowed through. I can’t get enough of these tracks!

TRACK: RUNNING ON EMPTY

ARTIST: DAVID LINDLEY with JACKSON BROWN

“Running on empty was the solo that inspired me to begin playing lap slide guitar.Lindley is one of the best on electric slide. His style is the ‘go to’ slide style of Nashville these days. His version of “Mercury Blues’ has been copied by Alan Jackson amongst others.“

TRACK: QUEEN OF CALIFORNIA

ARTIST: GREG LIESZ

“Greg has got a great feel on the slide. He’s very supportive in his playing which is a rare quality that’s been noticed and appreciated by many musicians such as Bill Frisell, John Mayer, Bob Dylan etc etc.”

TRACK: INDOSPANIOLA

ARTIST: DEBASHISH BHATTACHARYA

“Debashish is probably the fastest Indian slide player around. He’s reached out to western musicians to help give some context to what he’s doing. He and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Bhij Bushan Kabra are all pioneers of modern Indian slide guitar. ”
