Mixed Tape #2 Rob Ickes

Rob Ickes Mixed Tape

If you’ve heard Dobro on the radio or records over the last two decades, you’ve heard Rob Ickes’ playing. Respected as one of Nashville’s most sought after session musicians, Rob is a leading voice in the evolution of the resonator guitar today. As a 20 year veteran of the Bluegrass super group Blue Highway (who just released their 11th album The Game http://www.bluehighwayband.com/Pages/music.htm), Rob has been awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Dobro Player Of The Year Award 15 times, making him the most awarded instrumentalist in the history of the IBMA awards. This month, Rob, along with Tim Scheerhorn and the folks at National Guitars, released the new Rob Ickes Signature Model Scheerhorn Resophonic Guitar. Here’s a link for more details  http://www.robickes.com/store_L3.cfm . I hope to get my hands on one for the Slide Guitar Demo Series soon!

I asked Rob if he would put together a mix of songs that have inspired him over the years. I really dig what he came up with. I hope you enjoy it too.

TRACK: Beyond The Reef

ARTIST: Jerry Byrd and Marty Robbins

” I like this for a lot of reasons…definitely one of the coolest things I ever found on YouTube. These are just some of the best dobro fills ever. Jerry‘s pitch is just amazing, especially with all the complicated slants going on. Goes to show you can play slants in tune (or at least Jerry Byrd can!) I also like the simplicity of these two guys, totally live. And the sound quality is incredible. Very inspiring stuff…these guys did not need ProTools or Auto-tune…”

TRACK: DEVIL IN DISGUISE

ARTIST: BLUEGRASS ALBUM BAND (JERRY DOUGLAS ON DOBRO)

“I use this song a lot when I‘m teaching. I just sit with my class and we listen very closely to what‘s going on. So many different dynamics, everyone playing at times, hardly anyone playing at other times, great solos all the way around. It just sounds like they were sitting in a circle jamming and someone turned the tape on…maybe that‘s how it happened!“

TRACK: BUSTED

ARTIST: JOHN SCOFIELD

“This is from a great Ray Charles tribute cd that Scofield did a few years ago. Love to hear his gritty take on a country standard!”

TRACK: THE BROOM OF COWDENKNOWES

ARTIST: CHERISH THE LADIES

“one of my favorite bands of all time, a great Celtic group. This whole record is a killer. Great tune selection, vocals, perfect mixes. I was fortunate to play on CTL‘s record they did in Nashville a couple years ago, “Country Crossroads.” One of my favorite sessions ever…”

Editor’s note- I had a hard time tracking this one down. Pooch is a cute dog and all, but if you want to hear the whole song here’s a link to download it from itunes. https://itunes.apple.com

TRACK: OLD DEVILS DREAM

ARTIST: NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND

“I got out my record player a few months ago and I‘ve been revisiting some of my favorite LP‘s. These guys have done some of the best music ever, in my humble opinion!! Love the mix on the this album, and the fiddle solo on this song really tells a story. Pretty amazing stuff, even though there‘s no Dobro on this record!”

Here’s a great live version of this song. If you would like to hear the album version, here’s a link to download the track. https://itunes.apple.com
